A new Alabama specialty license plate is aiming to bring Mardi Gras pride to the open road.
The design celebrates Mobile as the birthplace of the tradition and is now open for pre-commitment orders.
Bright, festive, and instantly recognizable, the plate leans into the colors and symbols that define Carnival season while giving supporters a simple way to show what Mardi Gras means to them year-round.
The effort is sponsored by the Birthplace of Mardi Gras Foundation, with a clear goal in mind: turn everyday cars into moving reminders of a tradition that shaped the city’s identity long before beads and parades spread elsewhere.
A Design Rooted in Tradition
The plate itself is bold and unmistakably Mardi Gras.
A classic mask anchors the design, paired with the Mobile skyline and the familiar purple, green, and gold palette.
It feels celebratory without being overdone, something that fits just as well in February traffic as it does in the middle of summer.
Every detail was chosen with intention. The imagery reflects history, creativity, and the unmistakable sense of place tied to Carnival.
For longtime Mardi Gras fans and newer residents alike, the plate offers a visual shorthand for what makes the season special here.
A Mother-Daughter Idea Becomes Reality
The project began at the kitchen-table level, sparked by a conversation between Carol Danieli and her daughter, Jessica Allen.
What started as a simple idea turned into a surprising discovery. Despite Mobile’s deep Mardi Gras roots, no specialty plate existed to reflect it.
That gap became the motivation. The duo saw an opportunity to give back to the Mardi Gras community while creating something lasting.
Their collaboration blends generational pride with a forward-looking approach, tying tradition to a practical way of supporting local celebrations.
How the Pre-Commitment Process Works
Before the plate can hit the road statewide, it needs momentum. Alabama requires 1,000 pre-commitment orders for a specialty plate to move into full production.
As of now, about 170 supporters have signed on, leaving plenty of room for growth before the November 1, 2026 deadline.
The pre-commitment step is straightforward. Drivers do not need to be renewing their tags to participate.
Signing up simply helps reach the required count. Once that threshold is met, the plate becomes a permanent option, and supporters will receive their tags as production begins.
Supporting Mardi Gras All Year Long
Each plate costs $50, with proceeds going directly back into Mardi Gras through local krewes and celebrations in Mobile.
That funding helps sustain the behind-the-scenes work that keeps parades rolling, costumes crafted, and traditions passed along.
Organizers envision a future where Mardi Gras pride extends far beyond parade routes. By next season, they hope streets will be dotted with these plates, keeping the spirit alive long after Fat Tuesday wraps.
It’s a small change to a car’s exterior that carries a much bigger message about history, community, and celebrating where it all began.
