We owe a lot to the person who came up with the idea of putting a ground meat patty between two buns. No one is really sure who that person is or where the hamburger was invented. All we know is that it’s flippin’ delicious.
The burger is quintessentially American, as many people consider it to be the US’s national dish. We eat around 50 billion burgers a year, enough to circle the earth 32 times if arranged in a straight line.
The best thing about burgers is their customizability. Most states have a version or two that they’re proud of. The ingredients can vary wildly – as humble as fried okra to as extravagant as black truffles. Many chefs have gotten fancy with it and insist on using a specific combination of lean and fatty meats to produce a juicy patty.
But what is it that makes the burger the best thing ever? Well, there’s its one-handed convenience, and it’s usually the safest and most familiar thing on the menu. More importantly, it comes with the nostalgia of backyard barbecues. There’s nothing quite like having a burger in one hand and a sweet tea in the other.

Callaghan’s opened its doors way back in 1946. Ever since, they’ve been a staple in the Oakleigh Garden District. Many Mobilians would argue that they have the burgers in town. They don’t get too frou-frou with it, but they sure have perfected the art of making a classic burger. They even make their buns from scratch.
You could choose from a variety of slides along with your burger, which includes pasta salad, coleslaw, potato chips, and more. As expected, the inside looks like a cozy Irish pub. It’s also a sports bar and music venue.
The Noble South
203 Dauphin St, Mobile AL 36602
The Noble South offers scrumptious Southern staples like shrimp & grits, deviled eggs, pickled shrimp, and fried catfish, courtesy of Chefs Chris Rainosek, and Josh Lear. But perhaps the crowning jewel on their menu is the cheeseburger. It has an 8oz Wagyu Beef patty, caramelized onions, house-made ketchup, mustard, pickles, and American cheese, all cradled in a soft bun. This restaurant has a rustic yet modern feel and is a forerunner in preserving Southern fare. The Noble South does it by elevating familiar favorites that delight both locals and tourists alike.
609 Dauphin St, Mobile AL 36602
Five got its name from their 5 specialties, the first one being their cheeseburger. It has American cheese, bacon relish, and their house pickles. A serving comes with a portion of fries. Something has to be said about a place that highlights only five food items (apart from the few starters). They have tested and perfected to be delectable enough to carry the entire establishment. And by Jove, Five has done it.
Burger lovers rejoice! Five holds First 50 Wednesdays where the first 50 orders of burgers and fries are only at $5 for dine-in patrons. All tables are amply spaced out and sanitized after every use.
Loda Bier Garten
7899 Cottage Hill Rd, Mobile AL 36695
251 Dauphin St, Mobile AL 36602
Loda has quite a selection of burgers on their menu – a total of 11 kinds. Some of them are perfect if you’re looking for something a little out of the box. For example, their “Hugh Jass Waffle Burger” comes with Conecuh sausage and a sunny-side-up egg, all sandwiched between deep-fried buttermilk waffles covered in maple syrup. There’s also the “Mac Attack,” which consists of a deep-fried five-cheese mac n’ cheese patty on top of a regular grilled beef burger along with the usual fixings. Say that three times fast. Loda looks at burgers as blank canvases and turns them into something unusual and exciting.
Butch Cassidy’s Cafe
60 N Florida St, Mobile AL 36607
Another great burger option in Mobile. Home of the famous “Butch Burger,” Butch Cassidy’s has been in operation since 1993. It’s a family-friendly place that serves fresh unpretentious food, all cooked to order. Cassidy’s has garnered a few notches on their belt, most notably the Lagniappe 2019 Best Burger Award.
Among other things, they serve 11 kinds of burgers, all of which are pretty standard but done right. Should you ever choose to go there, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to order their chicken wings, their second most popular menu item. If you’re looking for a classic dive bar where you can chow down on a burger, have a few beers, and swap some stories, this is the place to be.
Roshell’s Cafe & Deli
2906 SpringHill Ave, Mobile AL 36607
Formerly Mack’s Wheelhouse, Roshell’s is a hidden gem that locals still sing praises about. This place is like an old-fashioned diner where the service is warm, and the meals are hearty. A burger is called “The Steer” at Roshell’s, and you can order it in 15 different ways. You can get one with Roquefort cheese or one with Mr. Mack’s original homemade chili. A great choice would be “The Mack Attack” which comes with three 8 oz. patties with all the trimmings if you’re up for a challenge. That thing is massive.
Roshell’s had to be on this list because The Steer is not just one of the best burgers you can get in Mobile, but in all of Alabama. Pro tip: Come here with a big appetite because even good eaters get a run for their money at Roshell’s.
