A Mobile nonprofit known for lifting the spirits of children with cancer has opened a brand-new home—just steps from where many of those children receive treatment.

Rapahope celebrated the ribbon cutting of its first dedicated building on Center Street, located beside USA Health. The location places the organization close to the hospital where many young patients receive chemotherapy and follow-up care.

For Rapahope, the new building represents a major milestone. The nonprofit has spent more than four decades supporting families impacted by childhood cancer. Until now, the organization operated out of borrowed space.

Now, Rapahope has a place of its own designed specifically for the children and families it serves.

Leaders say the goal remains the same as it has always been: helping families find joy, connection, and encouragement during some of the most difficult moments life can bring.

A Mission Built on Hope

Rapahope’s roots stretch back more than 40 years. Over that time, the organization has grown into a cornerstone of support for families navigating childhood cancer.

Executive Director Melissa McNichol said the new facility marks a long-awaited moment.

“Rapahope was founded over 40 years ago and we’ve lived in their dining room for 40 years,” McNichol said. “It’s been generous and awesome to be with them. Now we are in our own space right by where kids are treated and going to see the doctor.”

The location carries special meaning. Children visiting nearby clinics will pass the building regularly, creating a visible reminder that a community of support stands nearby.

McNichol hopes the space becomes a symbol of comfort and positivity.

“When they pass our building, they’ll remember joy and hope in a childhood diagnosis,” she said.

For an organization focused on encouragement, being close to the hospital creates a powerful connection between treatment and emotional support.

A Family’s Story of Support

For many families, Rapahope’s work becomes deeply personal.

The Hardy family knows that firsthand. Their son is a childhood cancer survivor, and they say the nonprofit helped guide them through one of the most challenging chapters of their lives.

“You don’t know how it affects you until it hits,” the family shared.

During their son’s treatment, Rapahope offered encouragement, activities, and moments of normal life that brought relief during a stressful time.

“They were amazing,” the family said. “They were put in our life right when we needed them. They supported us, loved us and gave us normalcy.”

Families often describe Rapahope programs as a place where children facing cancer can connect with others who understand the experience.

That sense of community can be powerful during treatment and recovery.

A Space Designed for Families

The new building allows Rapahope to expand its work in meaningful ways.

McNichol explained that having a permanent home provides both practical and emotional benefits. The facility offers a welcoming environment where families can gather, relax, and connect with staff and volunteers.

Private meeting areas will allow parents and caregivers to talk through challenges or receive support during difficult moments.

At the same time, the building creates space for the joyful side of Rapahope’s mission.

“It will give us privacy to talk to families when they come in,” McNichol said. “But we can also plan the fun in a bigger and better way.”

Programs often include group activities, celebrations, and creative events designed to help children step away from the stress of medical treatments, even if only for a few hours.

The proximity to USA Health means those opportunities are closer than ever.

A Community Effort That Continues Year-Round

Rapahope offers a wide range of free programs for children with cancer and their families.

Everything the organization provides comes at no cost to families. That commitment ensures every child can participate in activities and events that bring encouragement and connection.

One of Rapahope’s most well-known programs is its annual week-long summer camp for children diagnosed with cancer. The camp creates a chance for kids to enjoy classic summer experiences while surrounded by peers who understand their journey.

Throughout the year, the nonprofit hosts events, gatherings, and activities that keep families connected long after hospital visits end.

With its new building now open, Rapahope enters a new chapter while staying rooted in the same mission that started decades ago.

A welcoming space now stands beside the hospital doors—a place built on encouragement, community, and the belief that even during difficult seasons, moments of joy can still shine through.
