A Mobile-based animal rescue team jumped into action last Friday after an urgent Facebook post revealed a mother dog and her newborn puppies trapped by rising floodwater in southern Mississippi.

Stevie Lynn Lewis, an animal rescuer with Wags and Whiskers—a foster-based animal rescue right here in Mobile—saw the post showing a chained mama dog desperately barking for help as water rose around her eight tiny puppies.

Without hesitation, Lewis and her team made the drive across the state line to save them.

Mobile Rescuers Answer the Call

“The second that I saw that sweet mama dog on that heavy chain, trying with all of her might to get her babies safe and out of that water, I just knew we had to do something,” Lewis said.

The Wags and Whiskers team didn’t have a detailed plan, but they knew waiting wasn’t an option.

They headed straight to the Mississippi property where the situation had become critical. The pregnant dog had been chained outside after the homeowner passed away and a family member took over the property.

Left to survive freezing temperatures and rain alone, she gave birth to eight puppies while still chained up.

Tragically, one puppy drowned before the Mobile rescue team arrived, but they were able to save the mother and her seven remaining babies.

From Crisis to Comfort in Mobile

The mama dog, now named Maddie, made the journey back to Mobile where she’s experiencing care and kindness for the first time.

“Her seven little M&M’s, as I like to call them, because they all have M names, are growing daily,” Lewis shared.

The transformation has been incredible—Maddie now gets morning cuddles and curls up in Lewis’s lap during breaks from nursing.

“She’s truly, truly grateful for her rescue,” Lewis said. The seven puppies are thriving, gaining weight and strength every day under the watchful care of their Mobile foster family.

Why Mobile’s Foster Network Matters

Organizations like Wags and Whiskers operate entirely through foster homes, meaning local volunteers open their homes to animals in crisis.

This model allows rescues to respond quickly to emergencies like Maddie’s situation without being limited by kennel space.

“It’s just unacceptable providing a doghouse in the freezing cold and rain, that’s not shelter,” Lewis explained.

“A dog on a chain that weighs half as much as they do, that’s not a life.” The Mobile rescue community’s willingness to step up—even crossing state lines—creates a safety net for animals throughout the region who have nowhere else to turn.

Eight Happy Endings Coming Soon

In about nine weeks, Maddie and her seven puppies will be ready for adoption through Wags and Whiskers, meaning eight dogs will soon find forever homes, likely with families right here in the Mobile area.

The puppies are growing stronger daily, transforming from vulnerable newborns into healthy, playful pups.

Maddie herself will finally get to experience life as a beloved pet rather than a forgotten dog on a chain.

Thanks to a Mobile rescue organization willing to hit the road at a moment’s notice, this story gets the ending these dogs deserved all along. Sometimes all it takes is someone saying “we have to do something”—and Mobile’s animal rescue community proved once again they’re ready to do exactly that.
