Tuesday afternoon brought an unexpected jolt to Saint Stephens Road when a nearby building went up in flames, filling the air with smoke that had nothing to do with slow-cooked ribs.

Rodgers BBQ owner Eddie Rodgers stepped outside during what started as a routine day and immediately spotted smoke drifting from the building next door.

He headed back inside to get emergency calls rolling, and within minutes, firefighters were on the scene.

The fire, which started inside a mechanic shop just a few feet away, quickly grew intense enough to send flames shooting outward.

Even from the barbecue restaurant, the glow and smoke were impossible to miss.

For a few tense moments, the focus shifted from pulled pork to property protection as crews worked to keep the fire contained.

Fast Response Saves the Day

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department arrived in roughly five minutes, and that speed made the difference.

Firefighters fought the flames aggressively, keeping the heat from spreading into the restaurant. Rodgers noted how grateful he was for the quick arrival and the focused work happening right outside his door.

Another key factor that kept Rodgers BBQ safe was a firewall between the two buildings.

While the mechanic shop took the brunt of the damage and ended up a total loss, the barbecue restaurant only suffered some minor paneling damage.

No smoke damage, no kitchen damage, and no structural issues that would keep customers away for long.

A Brief Pause Before the Doors Opened Again

Once the fire was under control, the next step was waiting for the fire marshal and the health department to inspect the space.

Rodgers BBQ shut down for roughly four hours, giving officials time to make sure everything was safe.

By that evening, clearance came through. The grills fired back up, the doors opened, and customers returned.

Regulars who rely on the restaurant for weekday lunches and midweek dinner pickups rolled in without hesitation.

After all, the building still smelled like barbecue, not fire.

A Busy Wednesday Proves Loyalty Runs Deep

The day after the fire, Rodgers BBQ saw steady foot traffic from open to close.

Word spread quickly that the restaurant was fine, and the community showed up in typical Mobile fashion, by filling tables and takeout bags.

Rodgers confirmed that business bounced back right away, and the team jumped right into their normal rhythm.

The restaurant held to its usual hours, operating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The only real evidence that anything had happened was the slightly damaged paneling on the side of the building and the activity from investigators confirming the cause of the fire.

A Close Call and a Quick Recovery

Officials determined the fire originated from an electrical issue inside the mechanic shop, which now stands as a total loss.

The investigation continues, but Rodgers BBQ is fully back in business and serving as usual.

For nearby residents and commuters, the quick containment avoided traffic backups, restaurant disruptions, and a potentially much larger incident.

The community kept its favorite barbecue spot, and the restaurant kept its momentum with almost no interruption.

A scare like this could have turned into a much bigger problem, but between the firewall, the firefighters, and a supportive customer base, Rodgers BBQ slid right back into its groove.

In the end, it was a quick pause, a sigh of relief, and a reminder of how fast things can shift — and how quickly the neighborhood rallies around its own.
