Amtrak’s new Mardi Gras Service between New Orleans and Mobile is proving to be a runaway success.

Since its August launch, nearly 19,000 passengers have hopped aboard, filling trains for major Gulf Coast events. 

Average ridership now tops 105 passengers per trip, prompting Amtrak to tack on an extra train car—adding 60 more seats for popular weekends like New Orleans Saints home games.

The timing couldn’t be better. 

From football fans heading to the Superdome to classic-car lovers traveling to Mississippi’s “Cruisin’ the Coast,” demand keeps climbing. 

For a region long reliant on cars, the excitement surrounding this new rail option feels like a long-awaited connection clicking into place.

Amtrak isn’t just increasing capacity—it’s rewarding loyalty, too. 

Through its Guest Rewards program, the company rolled out a “3-3-3” promotion that gives riders triple points for completing three trips between August 18 and November 18. 

Even better, travelers who’ve already made multiple journeys will see bonus points applied automatically.

The initiative has boosted repeat ridership and added an element of fun for those making weekend getaways part of their routine. 

For anyone keeping an eye on both their budget and their carbon footprint, the train now offers more value than ever.

A Boost Beyond the Tracks

The ripple effect of the new line is already being felt beyond the stations. Local businesses from Mobile to Biloxi have seen a noticeable bump in visitors. 

David Clark, president and CEO of Visit Mobile, called the economic uptick “incredible and encouraging,” noting that hotels, restaurants, and attractions are already benefitting.

In Mississippi, Judy Young of Coastal Mississippi Tourism said the train is drawing both newcomers and returning guests—many of whom are rediscovering the charm of small-town stops along the route. 

For families, it’s become an easy way to reconnect with friends or enjoy quick weekend adventures without the stress of traffic or parking.

A Cleaner, Calmer Commute

Early data suggests the Mardi Gras Service is removing around 400 cars a day from I-10 and U.S. 90. 

That shift doesn’t just ease congestion—it helps lower emissions and makes the coast’s daily commute a little smoother.

For travelers used to long drives and unpredictable highway backups, the rail line offers a calmer, more scenic alternative. 

Watching the coastline roll by with a cup of coffee beats sitting in gridlock any day. 

And for communities along the way, fewer cars mean quieter roads and a little more breathing room during busy weekends.

The success of the Mardi Gras Service is already sparking conversation about what’s next. 

The Southern Rail Commission says the route’s popularity proves that the Gulf Coast is ready for more investment in passenger rail. 

With strong ridership, growing local support, and visible economic impact, the case for expansion keeps getting stronger.

For now, though, the twice-daily trips between Mobile and New Orleans are something to celebrate. 

With adult coach fares starting at just $15, the route has become more than a travel option—it’s part of a new rhythm along the coast. 

From big-city festivals to quiet waterfront escapes, the train is giving the region a smoother, more connected way to move.
