Wilmer Hall’s residential and educational programs are non-profit, faith-based, and designed to help those in need, including children and teenagers who need a safe place to call home and go to school.
In the 12 years since its beginning, the Education Program, named Education4Life, has achieved a 100% graduation rate.
How Did Wilmer Hall Begin?
Richard Hooker Wilmer, the second Episcopalian bishop of Alabama, established Wilmer Hall in 1864 to care for orphans of the Civil War.
Since 1916, it’s been located on Old Shell Road.
What Does Wilmer Hall Offer?
Because of poverty, violence, negligence, and homelessness, Wilmer Hall Children’s Home focuses on providing a secure haven for children and young adults.
Children and young people from various backgrounds can benefit from this program.
A family atmosphere at Wilmer Hall ensures that each child or teenager receives the help and affection they need to thrive.
Young people should be helped in four aspects:
- Physical well-being
- Mental well-being
- Academic success, and
- Spiritual development.
To be successful, Wilmer Hall has relied on a tailored approach, positive encouragement of accomplishments, deliberate and compassionate answers to failures, and genuine care for each individual’s spiritual well-being.
These young adults in their transitional program receive support in their move to self-sufficiency by obtaining the required educational, occupational, and social skills.
Wilmer Hall can house up to 34 youth residents and educate up to 125 children, resulting in well over 150 young people being housed at any given time.

Their primary need is unlimited donations to carry out their objective to the fullest extent possible.
