Warming Stations Open in Mobile as Cold Weather Hits

Temperatures in Mobile are taking an unusual dive this week, bringing a rare chill to the Gulf Coast.

In response, the community is coming together to ensure no one is left out in the cold.

Waterfront Rescue Mission is coordinating five warming shelters across the city, including Central Presbyterian Church and McKemie Place, to provide safe and warm spaces for families, women, and men.

To make access even easier, the WAVE Transit system is waiving fees on fixed routes, helping those in need reach these shelters without cost.

If you or someone you know could use this assistance, call (251) 433-1847 for more information.

These efforts show the strength of a community that looks out for one another, especially during challenging times.

Don’t Forget About Pets!

While you’re bundling up against the cold, don’t forget the family members with fur!

Mobile Animal Services is reminding pet owners to take extra precautions to keep pets safe.

If bringing them indoors isn’t an option, make sure their outdoor shelter is sturdy and weatherproof.

Think solid walls, a roof, and straw bedding for insulation.

Be mindful of what not to use—heat lamps can pose fire risks, and blankets can collect moisture, leaving pets even colder.

And don’t forget water! Dehydration can happen even in freezing temperatures.

These small steps can go a long way in keeping your pets warm, comfortable, and healthy.

Mobile Faces the Chill

The icy grip of this week’s polar front isn’t just hitting Mobile—it’s stretching across much of the U.S.

Roads in other states are blanketed in snow, schools are closing, and power outages are making national headlines.

Here in Mobile, the focus is on preparation and support.

Warming shelters are open, pets are being cared for, and neighbors are checking in on each other.

It’s a testament to how a community can rally together, even when the weather takes a dramatic turn.

Share the Word About Warming Shelters

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency has compiled a detailed list of warming shelters across the state, including those in Mobile.

This information is a lifeline for many, and getting it into the right hands can make all the difference.

Share the details with anyone who might need it—text a friend, call a neighbor, or post on social media.

A simple gesture like passing along a phone number or address could help someone find safety and warmth during this cold snap.

Staying Warm, Staying Connected

For those using Mobile’s warming shelters, these spaces provide vital relief from the bitter cold.

And for those fortunate enough to stay warm at home, this is a time to look out for others.

Check in on neighbors, offer a helping hand, and share shelter details with those who might need them.

This cold front may be temporary, but the care and compassion shown during it leave a lasting impact.

From shelters and transit services to pet safety and neighborly kindness, Mobile’s response proves that even in freezing weather, warmth isn’t hard to find.
