Our Port City had a historic day on Wednesday at the US Army Corps of Engineers broke ground for its new district headquarters.
It’s near the Mobile Civic Center.
This moment marked the culmination of a decade of planning and collaboration between the City and USACE.
The current USACE building on St. Joseph Street is in need of renovation, making the timing of this new construction project perfect.
The new office facility in Downtown Mobile will provide a modern and improved space for the Corps.
The facility’s design, created by the Architectural Revie Board and FD Stonewater, looks impressive.
Mayor Stimpson showed his enthusiasm, and we can all agree it’s better than an empty parking lot.
This project is just the beginning of the exciting developments happening Downtown.
There are potential projects like the new bridge over 1-10 and the deepening of the harbor.
The new headquarters will accommodate 800 employees and will come with a parking garage for USACE personnel and the public.
The Mayor believes this parking garage will trigger further enhancements around the Civic Center.
During the parking deck construction, locals are encouraged to find alternative transportation options, especially during Mardi Gras season.
So, how is the construction of this new facility any different from any other undertaking?
Well, this groundbreaking event symbolizes the start of a more ambitious redevelopment plan, aiming to connect the area to the river and create park spaces.
The goal is to have a Mobile where everything seamlessly connects.
The City estimates that the building and parking deck will be completed by January 2025.
Construction of the parking deck is set to begin in approximately 90 days.
