The Mobile Chamber recently named Merrill P. Thomas Co. as the Small Business of the Year, giving a well-deserved spotlight to this thriving commercial real estate firm.

Held at the Renaissance Plaza Hotel, the event wasn’t just about an award—it was a celebration of the businesses that keep the local economy buzzing.

A Win Worth Celebrating

Merrill P. Thomas Co. stood out among monthly honorees to claim the top prize.

For real estate broker Pratt Thomas, the moment felt “surreal.”

It wasn’t only about the $10,000 prize but also the honor of being recognized alongside other standout businesses.

“To see respect for what we do every day—it’s pretty cool,” Thomas said.

Small Businesses Are the Backbone

To qualify, businesses must have fewer than 100 employees and showcase both operational excellence and community impact.

Former Shoe Station CEO Brent Barkin, who sponsored the $10,000 prize, stressed the importance of recognizing these local heroes.

“These owners pour everything into their businesses. This recognition really means something,” Barkin said.

Patrick Murphy, the 2025 Mobile Chamber Chairman, added that small businesses are the driving force behind the region’s economic success.

Why Recognition Matters

This isn’t just a trophy. It’s a nod to the grit and heart of small business owners.

Beyond the cash prize, winners get a boost in visibility, community support, and a chance to inspire others.

“Our local economy thrives because of these businesses. They’re the ones doing the heavy lifting,” Murphy shared.

Bigger Things Ahead for 2025

The Mobile Chamber is already looking to make next year’s awards even more impactful.

Small businesses are encouraged to start preparing their applications now—it’s a chance to showcase their work and celebrate their teams.

“It’s more than an award,” Barkin said. “It’s a celebration of everything they’ve built.”

With their hard work, creativity, and determination, Mobile’s small business community keeps proving that they’re the heart of innovation and growth in the region.
