Prom season is around the corner, and for many high school students, that means finding the perfect dress or suit.
But let’s be real—formalwear isn’t cheap.
Luckily, two local programs are stepping up to make sure every student can enjoy prom night without the financial stress.
The Royal Closet: A Community Effort
The Royal Closet is back, accepting donations of gently used or new formalwear to help students shine on prom night.
Dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories are all welcome.
Got a Mardi Gras ball gown collecting dust?
That tux that no longer fits?
Now’s the time to clear out your closet and give it a second life.
Denise Riemer, the program’s coordinator, hopes to make prom more accessible for students who might otherwise miss out.
Donations can be dropped off at various locations, including the Mobile County Public Schools Central Office, Citronelle High School, and Bryant High School.
Collection ends March 11, with students able to pick out their outfits later in the month.
Project Prom: More Than Just Dresses
Meanwhile, the Mobile Area Association of REALTORS (MAAR) is rolling out the third annual Project Prom: A Day of Giving and Glamour on March 8.
This event gives high schoolers the chance to pick out a free prom dress from a beautifully curated selection at the MAAR office.
To keep up with demand, Project Prom is introducing the Project Prom Princess program.
High school ambassadors will help run dress drives at their schools, encouraging their classmates to donate.
As a bonus, these students will earn service hours while making a real difference in their community.
Donations are accepted through March 6 at the MAAR office on Airport Boulevard.
A Night to Remember, No Matter the Budget
Prom is a milestone, but for many families, it’s an expensive one.
Between tickets, dinner, and outfits, the costs add up fast.
Programs like The Royal Closet and Project Prom make sure financial worries don’t keep students from celebrating.
Both initiatives are fueled by community generosity.
The more people donate, the more students get to enjoy a night of fun, friendship, and unforgettable memories.
