Mom Delivers Baby Outside Hospital in Midnight Rush

Shea and Colton Young were expecting a fast labor. But not this fast.

What started as a late-night contraction quickly became a 17-minute sprint to USA Health Children’s and Women’s Hospital.

Their second son had other plans, though. By the time they reached the emergency entrance, it was too late for check-in—Shea delivered baby Shepherd in the front seat, right outside the hospital doors.

Colton ran inside trying to get help.

“There’s a head poking out,” he told staff. But before anyone made it back to the car, Shea already had their son in her arms.

From First Contraction to Baby in Under 30 Minutes

The rush began when Shea suddenly felt intense contractions around midnight.

She’d gone through labor before, so she knew things could move quickly. But this time, it happened almost instantly.

“I said throw the bags in the car,” she recalled. Colton hit the gas, shaving what’s normally a 30-minute trip down to 17 minutes.

But by mile 11, there was no stopping baby Shepherd.

Four minutes from the hospital, they knew it was game on.

A Big Arrival With Perfect Timing

Shepherd Roman Young was born at 12:32 a.m., weighing just under 8 pounds. His timing couldn’t have been more dramatic—or more poetic.

He arrived exactly 18 months to the day after his big brother, Judson.

Shea had joked for months about having the baby in the car.

“I kind of jinxed myself,” she laughed. Still, she couldn’t believe how it unfolded. “I thought I had hours left.”

A Name With Meaning and a Story to Match

The name Shepherd holds deep meaning for the family, and his dramatic arrival only added to it. “He came in with a bang,” Shea said. “God has already played a big part in his life.”

From a head-first hello in the front seat to a healthy delivery under the hospital awning, it’s a story they’ll be telling for years.

Now Home With One More in Tow

By Friday, the Youngs were discharged and settling into life as a family of four.

With a toddler and a newborn, there’s no shortage of energy at home—but they’re ready.

After a birth like that, diaper duty sounds pretty manageable!
