The City of Mobile is making big plans to honor one of its most legendary natives, Jimmy Buffett.
Officials are on the hunt for an artist to create a larger-than-life bronze sculpture of the beloved musician, set to be displayed along the waterfront at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico.
This tribute will be more than just a statue—it’s a way to celebrate Buffett’s deep connection to the Gulf Coast and the impact he had on music, culture, and the laid-back lifestyle so many admire.
A Waterfront Landmark in the Making
Buffett’s legacy will soon have a permanent home right on the water, a fitting location for someone who built a career on island-inspired tunes and sailing vibes.
The bronze sculpture will take center stage at the museum, where fans and visitors can stop by, snap a picture, and soak in the coastal energy that Buffett himself loved.
With a backdrop of the bay, the statue will add to Mobile’s growing list of must-see landmarks, giving both locals and tourists a special spot to celebrate one of the Gulf Coast’s own.
A Festival to Remember
The big reveal won’t be just any ordinary unveiling—it’ll be part of the 4th Annual Son of a Sailor Festival in September 2026.
This festival, already a celebration of Buffett’s music and influence, will take things to the next level with the addition of a brand-new museum exhibit dedicated to his life and career.
The exhibit will span two floors of the National Maritime Museum, offering fans an in-depth look at Buffett’s journey through never-before-seen artifacts, unreleased recordings, and rare behind-the-scenes footage.
With his family partnering on the project, this will be one of the most personal tributes ever put together.
Calling All Artists
The search is officially on for the right artist to bring Buffett’s spirit to life in bronze.
Mobile officials are asking artists to reference photos of him between 2000 and 2015 for inspiration, capturing the essence of the man who made beachside escapism a way of life.
The Mobile Arts Council is handling applications, and artists have until April 25, 2025, to submit their proposals.
Whoever lands the job will have the honor of creating something that will stand as a symbol of Buffett’s legacy for generations to come.
Buffett’s Gulf Coast Roots
For those who may not know, Buffett wasn’t just a passing visitor to the Gulf Coast—he was one of its own.
Born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and raised in Mobile, he graduated from McGill Institute in 1964 before setting off on a career that would bring the island lifestyle to millions.
This sculpture is more than a tribute to his music—it’s a reminder of the deep connection he had with this region.
And soon, Mobile will have a place where fans can come together to celebrate the man, the music, and the Margaritaville state of mind.
