Mobile Gains Momentum as Southern Film Hub

It looked like a scene from a movie because it literally was one.

When film crews took over downtown Mobile last fall for the Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck, it wasn’t a one-time event.

Traffic paused, cameras rolled, and the city transformed—all part of a growing trend that’s turning Lower Alabama into a sought-after movie backdrop.

The film, which recently hit theaters, is one of many choosing the Port City for its scenery, support, and film-friendly vibe.

From wide boulevards to coastal backdrops, Mobile’s cinematic appeal is building serious momentum—and more productions are lining up for their shot.

Behind the Scenes of the Boom

Film isn’t new to the area, but things really kicked into gear after Alabama passed tax incentives back in 2009.

Since then, Mobile has become a hub for all kinds of projects—feature films, commercials, TV shows, music videos, and even training content.

And we’re not talking one or two shoots.

Since October alone, over 140 productions have filmed in Mobile.

At any given time, several feature films are either scouting or locking down locations, alongside commercial shoots that can rival movie sets in both size and job creation.

From bustling downtown streets that double as big cities to quiet woods and breezy beaches within a short drive, there’s a backdrop for just about anything a script might call for.

Scouting the Perfect Spot

Before actors ever hit their marks, location scouts are hard at work.

One standout stop on a recent scouting tour? Collective Studio in Midtown.

With its airy vibe and natural light, it’s got the versatility to play an NYC apartment in one scene and a modern office in the next.

And it’s not just buildings that catch a producer’s eye.

Vintage cars, corner cafés, and even barbershops have all made their way into scripts. One couple’s classic Corvette was featured in multiple films—and even got the Liam Hemsworth signature treatment.

With an ever-growing database of photogenic places, the Mobile Film Office is making it easier than ever for productions to see the potential and say yes.

It’s a Wrap on Complicated Paperwork

Time is money on set, and part of Mobile’s appeal lies in how smoothly things run.

The process for permits, scouting, and securing locations has been streamlined to make it as easy as possible for productions to get rolling.

Producers know they can get support, fast answers, and even a bit of southern hospitality while they’re here.

Whether it’s a big-budget film or a brand video, the Mobile team shows up ready to help—and that level of service keeps the industry coming back.

A Star Turn for the Gulf Coast

With over 70 films shot in the area since 1977—and the majority in the last 15 years—the numbers are climbing, and so is the excitement.

What started as a few film shoots here and there has evolved into a steady flow of creative projects, all adding energy, jobs, and opportunity to the region.

The Port City’s camera-ready charm, logistical ease, and creative buzz make it an increasingly popular choice.

From small crews to blockbuster sets, more stories are starting right here, and the credits are just beginning to roll.
