Gulf Shores Beaches

Gulf Shores is packed with scenic beaches and the local businesses are in full operation with strict safety protocols in place. With its 32 miles of milky quartz sand beaches, Gulf Shores is an ideal setting for your next getaway. The following beaches in this area are cheap or free to access.

Gulf Shores Public Beach

This large public beach is popular among locals and tourists alike. Here, you’ll find no shortage of space to do all sorts of activities like sunbathing, sandcastle building, parasailing, jet-skiing, or a simple picnic with friends.

There are many establishments around offering refreshments and souvenirs, so it makes sense as Gulf Shores’ main hangout spot.

Gulf State Park

If you want to have a more active beach stay, the Gulf State Park is worth visiting. There, you’ll find an Adventure Center where you can zipline to your heart’s content. You can also check out the local wildlife by going on the Back Country Trail. You might just spot a gator or two.

After a long day of adventuring, you can settle in front of a cozy fireplace to dry off from the cool waters and swap some stories.

Orange Beach

Orange Beach stretches over 8 miles. It’s at the eastern tip of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. This is the place to be if you intend on spending afternoons fishing at the pier, which spans around 400 feet.

In Wolf Bay, you’ll find the lovely Waterfront Park with numerous dining and grilling amenities. There’s nothing quite like chowing down on fresh fish that you’ve caught and prepared yourself. Lastly, the more adventurous can snorkel or dive to explore The Lulu (a shipwreck) or the surrounding reefs.

West Beach

West Beach is a favorite among those who value a bit more privacy. Although not packed with amenities, you’ll want to go to West Beach if you take relaxation seriously. There’s nothing but the sounds of the rhythmic waves and seagulls there. For your comfort, you may want to take along some snacks, beach towels, and interesting reads.

Fun Stuff To Do In The Gulf Shores

1. Get up close and personal with sloths, kangaroos, and lemurs

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo holds animal encounters where you can meet tame and fascinating animals. It’s a great learning moment for kids and adults, and it’s a unique photo opportunity! This zoo has been featured on Animal Planet and is home to over 199 species.

2. Ride the Ferris wheel at the wharf

Definitely a Gulf Shores landmark, riding the Ferris Wheel is a great way to take in the sights. Towering at 112 feet, you’ll get amazing views of the area and spend an intimate moment with family and friends. It’s also nice to note that this Ferris wheel is wheelchair accessible.

3. Explore the Battleship Memorial Park

The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park is now in its Phase II Opening as a response to the pandemic. Folks are required to wear masks but are otherwise free to enjoy their guided tours. History enthusiasts can take a moment to learn about the history of USS Alabama and USS Drum. You can also ogle at their impressive display of tanks and artilleries, as well as the Medal of Honor aircraft pavilion.

4. Get creative

The Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach offers glass blowing and pottery classes to the public. These crafts need unique and often expensive tools that aren’t easily acquirable. They also have kids and teens workshops for parents who want to encourage their children’s interests and talents. If painting with oils, acrylics, and watercolors is your jam, they have workshops for that too!

5. Zoom around at the track

The Track is an amusement park that features go-karts, minigolf, blaster boats, and its very own arcade. They even have the Skycoaster, a 110-foot swing that will allow you to safely fly at 70 mph. Not for the fainthearted, The Track’s features will delight adrenaline junkies and those looking for active family fun.
