It’s really happening. After years of talk, delays, and dashed hopes, Amtrak is officially bringing passenger rail back to the Gulf Coast.

Service between New Orleans and Mobile is set to start in summer 2025—and this time, it’s locked in.

The plan includes two daily roundtrips, giving the region a new (and long overdue) way to travel.

Amtrak confirmed the launch to New Orleans’ Transportation Committee, and now the countdown begins.

Gulf Coast Towns Get Back on the Map

The train won’t just connect New Orleans and Mobile—it’ll stop in Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, too.

That means more ways to explore the coast without hitting the highway.

For people who live in one of these cities and want to bounce over to another for the day, this is a game-changer.

Think brunch in Gulfport, a concert in Biloxi, or dinner in Mobile—without filling up the gas tank.

No Car? No Problem. Ride Downtown to Downtown

One of the biggest perks? You can leave the car at home.

This is a straight shot from one downtown to another.

New Orleans’ food, festivals, and sports are now just a train ride away. And you can be back by bedtime.

This is perfect for Saints fans, concertgoers, food lovers, and anyone who wants a stress-free day trip without I-10 traffic.

Why the Wait Took So Long

This route used to exist. Then Hurricane Katrina rolled through and shut it all down in 2005.

Ever since, talk of restoring service has come and gone like the tide.

It took years to sort through funding, negotiate with freight companies, and update the tracks and stations.

Every time it looked close, something slowed it down.

But now, it’s official. No more meetings. No more maybe. Just trains.

A Small Start with Big Potential

Two daily roundtrips might sound small—but it’s the start of something big.

It links the coast in a new way and opens up options that didn’t exist before. Work, play, weekend getaways, or just skipping the drive—it’s all on the table now.

And for everyone who’s been saying “I’ll believe it when I see it”—get ready to see it.

Summer 2025, the train pulls in. Finally.
