Mary Travis thought she was walking into just another school assembly.
Dressed as Gilly Gator, Gilliard Elementary’s mascot, she had no clue she was about to be the center of attention.
In front of a roaring crowd of students, teachers, and state officials, Travis was handed one of the biggest honors in education—the Milken Educator Award.
Often called the “Oscars of Teaching,” the award recognizes educators who bring creativity, energy, and excellence to the classroom.
The Only Teacher in Alabama to Win
Travis didn’t just win for her school or her city.
She was the only teacher in the entire state to receive this award in 2024.
Since Alabama joined the Milken Educator Awards in 1998, only 42 teachers have earned this recognition.
State Superintendent Dr. Eric G. Mackey was on hand to celebrate.
“This honor shines a spotlight on the exceptional talent and commitment of teachers across our state,” he said.
A Surprise to Remember
The moment the announcement was made, the gym erupted.
Students cheered, teachers clapped, and Travis stood there in her mascot costume, completely stunned. She later called the moment surreal.
Teachers like Travis make learning exciting.
They inspire kids to love math and science, turn classrooms into places of discovery, and create moments that stick with students long after they leave school.
Her dedication clearly didn’t go unnoticed.
A $25,000 Bonus
Along with the award, Travis walked away with a $25,000 cash prize.
No restrictions. No red tape. She can use it however she wants.
She also became part of a national network of over 3,000 Milken Educators, opening doors to new opportunities, training, and connections with some of the best teachers in the country.
Why This Matters
This isn’t really just about one teacher. It’s a huge win for education.
It reminds everyone how much great teachers matter and highlights the incredible work happening in classrooms every day.
Passionate educators change lives. And thanks to Travis, the Gilly Gator spirit just got even stronger.
