One Year Anniversary Block Party
October 5, 2024 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
The Historic Avenue Cultural Center (HACC) will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a Block Party on October 5th. This event will feature pop-up programs highlighting art, local histories, and a new initiative to support entrepreneurship and culture building within the community.
The Block Party will showcase local BIPOC-owned businesses and focus on sustainable entrepreneurship, its connection to the arts, and its role in revitalizing neighborhoods. Attendees can enjoy DJs, food trucks, an art activity, and a BIPOC Maker’s Market. Local BIPOC makers, chefs, and business owners can apply for tent space, with priority given to homegrown entrepreneurs and creative placemaking.
The event, opening at 11 a.m. after the Gulf Coast Challenge Parade hosted by Bishop State on MLK, will kick off with a fire speaker series featuring community advocates. This will be followed by a panel discussion on “The Future of the Avenue” with representatives from City Council, 3 Mile Creek, Bishop State, and The Elk Lodge. Performances will include a movement piece by Zoe Banell & Dunbar Dance Team, spoken word by Huggybear Da Poet, HBO Def Poet Red Storm, Chrystal Jones, and Rachie Mack. The event will conclude at 3 p.m. with a Second Line led by the Calloway-Smith Marching Band.
