Mobile Symphony Orchestra: Modern Romance
February 8 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
The Mobile Symphony Orchestra’s February concert opens with Steve Reich’s groundbreaking Clapping Music, a minimalist masterpiece that redefines rhythm and ensemble performance. Featuring precise handclap patterns that gradually shift and evolve, Reich’s composition captivates with its hypnotic simplicity and intricate rhythmic interplay.
Continuing the theme of rhythm, the program features Philip Glass’s Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists, highlighting Principal Timpanist Laura Noah alongside guest percussionist Peter Ferry. This dynamic concerto showcases the timpani’s versatility and expressive power, creating a rhythmic dialogue that moves between deep resonance and ethereal heights.
The concert concludes with a suite from Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet. Known for its vivid orchestral colors and emotional intensity, this beloved work brings Shakespeare’s tragic love story to life. From the tender Balcony Scene to the fiery Death of Tybalt, the orchestra delivers Prokofiev’s evocative melodies with passion and drama, immersing the audience in a powerful journey of love, fate, danger, and beauty.
