Downtown Mobile turned into a sea of wagging tails and tiny paws Sunday afternoon as Mo’Bay Beignet hosted its second annual Dachshund on Dauphin event.

Cathedral Square, usually known for coffee and conversation, became the city’s most adorable racetrack.

Dozens of dachshunds — some dressed to impress, others just happy to be there — stole the show.

“We’ve got at least 60 dachshunds running around here getting ready for a Dachshund run in Cathedral Square,” said event host Eric Foxx, laughing as he tried to keep up with the chaos.

It was the kind of scene that makes even the most serious passerby stop and smile.

The Race for the Title of Top Dog

The main event: the Dachshund Dash. Small dogs with big personalities lined up for the ultimate showdown.

“You’ve got to be quick. You’ve got to be fast, you’ve got to be agile,” Foxx announced, raising a giant stuffed dachshund trophy for all to see. “You have to be on your game for this to happen!”

Each pup had a cheering section — families, friends, and plenty of cameras ready to capture the blur of fur racing across Cathedral Square.

Sure, their legs were only a couple of inches long, but that didn’t stop them from running with Olympic-level enthusiasm.

Poppy’s Big Day

Among the crowd favorites was Poppy, an eight-month-old dachshund with more energy than a double espresso.

Her secret? Backyard training sessions chasing soccer balls. Her family said she was born for the spotlight, and when the race began, she didn’t disappoint.

“She’s got that puppy energy,” one of her handlers said proudly. And with each determined stride, Poppy proved that confidence (and maybe a few too many treats) can take you far.

When she crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted. It wasn’t about speed alone — it was about spirit.

Beignets, Raffles, and Smiles All Around

Mo’Bay Beignet kept the event lively with giveaways, gift cards, and a raffle for a year’s worth of free beignets — a prize as coveted as the dachshund trophy itself.

Between rounds of racing, families sipped coffee, kids played in the grass, and new friendships formed over shared love for long, low dogs.

The air smelled of powdered sugar, and laughter mixed with the sound of paws on pavement. The event had that unmistakable Mobile charm — equal parts Southern hospitality and lighthearted fun.

A Day Built for Joy

By the end of the afternoon, it didn’t matter who took home the stuffed dachshund or the beignet prizes. Every pup was a winner, every human left smiling, and Cathedral Square felt just a little brighter.

Events like this one capture something special about Mobile — a love of community, creativity, and a good excuse to gather downtown on a sunny Sunday. For dachshunds like Poppy (and the humans who adore them), Dachshund on Dauphin wasn’t just a race — it was a reminder that joy often comes on four short legs with a wagging tail.
