Davidson High School’s girls basketball team gave fans something to cheer about Tuesday night, and it wasn’t just the scoreboard.
Coach Charlie Shipp snagged his 600th career win with a commanding 42-27 victory over Mary G. Montgomery.
Cue the confetti!
The Warriors didn’t just win; they put on a show.
Down by five points at halftime? No sweat.
They came roaring back in the third quarter with a jaw-dropping 22-1 run that left everyone on their feet.
It was the perfect game for Shipp to notch a milestone so few coaches ever achieve.
A Career Worth Celebrating
Let’s talk about the man of the hour.
Coach Shipp’s 600 wins aren’t just numbers—they’re proof of decades of dedication, skill, and heart.
Every one of those victories happened at Davidson, where he’s led the team to 23 area championships, six Final Fours, and two runner-up finishes in Class 6A.
“It’s truly a milestone,” Shipp said, flashing a smile after the big win. “I’ve been so blessed to coach here and work with amazing players and coaches over the years.”
But basketball isn’t the whole story.
Shipp’s been coaching for 35 years, and if you add his 301 wins as Davidson’s softball coach, he’s sitting at a jaw-dropping 901 career wins.
Talk about legendary!
A Team That Brings the Fire
This milestone wasn’t a solo act—it was a full-on team effort.
Tuesday’s game showed just how determined the Warriors are.
When the going got tough, they got tougher, flipping the script in the third quarter and never looking back.
Forward Jayden Sharp summed it up best: “He’s a really good coach, and he pushes everybody to their best ability.”
That push paid off in a big way, and with an 11-6 record this season, this team is just getting started.
Shipp couldn’t be prouder of his squad. “I’ve got a great group of players this year,” he said. “Our goal is to make it to the Final Four, and I think we’ve got what it takes to get there.”
Coaching Generations of Warriors
Shipp’s coaching career isn’t just about wins—it’s about connections.
He’s been at Davidson long enough to coach multiple generations of players.
Take senior forward Zydia Johnson, for example. Her mom played for Shipp years ago, and now Zydia’s carrying on the family tradition.
That kind of legacy is rare, but it’s exactly what makes Shipp’s career so special.
The Best Is Yet to Come
After a milestone like this, you’d think Coach Shipp might take a moment to soak it all in.
But if you know him, you know he’s already thinking about the next game.
Davidson heads to LeFlore on Wednesday for a showdown with the Rattlers, and you can bet the Warriors will be bringing their A-game.
Still, Tuesday night was one for the books.
A packed crowd.
A huge comeback.
And a coach who’s spent decades inspiring players to be their best, on and off the court.
Here’s to Coach Shipp, his incredible 600 wins, and whatever victories lie ahead.
It’s safe to say this celebration isn’t over yet!
