About Dauphin Island

A real gem in the crown that is the Gulf Coast, Dauphin Island has always been bustling with activity. Even before the French reached its shores in 1699, Native Americans used the area to fish and hunt for oysters. It eventually got occupied by the British and Spanish as well.

You can find the historic Fort Gaines at the very east end of Dauphin Island. It served a crucial role in the Battle of Mobile Bay. These days, Dauphin Island still gets a lot of action, albeit the peaceful kind. Tourists and locals alike flock there for some fun and relaxation.

It has one large public beach, complete with a boardwalk, covered picnic tables, and restrooms. Dauphin Island is also pet-friendly, so it’s totally fine to bring along your furry friends. There are also the East and West End Beaches, both stunning and well-preserved.

Fun Stuff To Do At Dauphin Island

1. Get your nerd on at Fort Gaines

Aside from sunbathing and shelling, you may also want to make your stay a bit more educational. Fort Gaines has been a landmark for over 150 years and it is listed as one of America’s most endangered historic sites.

On a visit to Fort Gaines, you can explore tunnels and a blacksmith shop. There is a museum on-site where you can learn all about the role Fort Gaines has played for Mobile over the years.

2. Observe aquatic life

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (A.K.A. The Estuarium) has over 100 species on display. Highlighting Mobile Bay as the fourth largest estuary in the US, it’s a great place to take the kids. There, they can marvel at the wonders of oceanic animals and plants.

3. Hang out on a boat

Short boat trips are available to access the waters surrounding Dauphin Island. You can go fishing, share a romantic meal, or throw a party out in the water. On a boat, you can feel your stress melt away as you’re soothed by the sun, wind, and cool water.

4. Try water sports

At the Dauphin Island Marina, you can rent paddleboards and pontoon boats. It’s important to stay active even when you’re in vacation mode, right? If fishing and drinking beers are more your speed, chartered fishing trips are available at the Marina too. These trips are usually inclusive of supplies like rods, bait, and tackle.

5. Stretch your legs at Indian Shell Mound Park

Take a walk among moss-draped oaks lining 11 acres of historic land. It’s a great place to meditate and spot migrating birds. The park got its name from being a Native American sacred burial ground. They would put oyster shells on top of the gravesites. It’s a spiritual place that calls for introspection.

It’s Beach Time

Dauphin Island calls, so we must go. With strict safety protocols in place, I’m relieved that we can travel again. I don’t think anyone would argue with me when I say that it’s time we decompress. 2020 did a number on our mental health, so perhaps a stay at the beautiful, unpretentious Dauphin Island is just what you need to recharge.
