Something stylish could be on the horizon for West Mobile.
The old Hardeman National Guard Armory, once known for its history and heavy-duty charm, might soon trade in its past for plush pillows and keycards.
A boutique hotel, complete with around 87 rooms, is in the works thanks to a proposal from Burton Property Group.
The spot? Right near Municipal Park, tucked into the Villages of Springhill area.
The armory’s story may be taking a modern twist, but the plan still honors the location’s community vibe.

The Process Is in Motion
This idea didn’t just appear out of nowhere.
The wheels started turning in 2023 when the City of Mobile put out a call for proposals to breathe new life into the city-owned site. Burton Property Group stepped up, and things have been moving along steadily since then.
In April, the Board of Zoning Adjustment gave the green light—conditionally, of course.
Before anything gets built, the plans need to be tweaked to meet local design guidelines and a few other standards.
It’s the kind of process that ensures any big change still feels like home to those who live nearby.
Planning the Next Step
Fast forward to May, and the City of Mobile Planning Commission also gave the project its conditional approval.
This time, it came with a caveat: a traffic impact study. Makes sense—if you’re adding 87 rooms, you want to be sure the surrounding streets can handle the extra activity without missing a beat.
So, while the hotel hasn’t officially broken ground yet, the pieces are lining up.
It’s a careful balance of progress and planning, designed to fit in with the flow of the neighborhood rather than disrupt it.
All Eyes on July
The next big date on the calendar? July 15.
That’s when the Mobile City Council will hold a public hearing on the project. It’s a chance for folks to speak up, show support, or share concerns before any final decisions are made.
Public hearings like this are an important part of the process, giving everyone a voice in shaping the future of their surroundings.
In the meantime, the site remains under contract with Burton, as it has been since last year. While the paperwork and approvals may take time, the vision for what could be is already taking shape.
