After two years and $9.5 million worth of renovations, Alabama’s newest public beach—Bayfront Park in Coden—finally opened its gates on Sunday, March 9.
The park’s revival was fueled by funds from Deepwater Horizon fines through the RESTORE Act.
It’s now an inviting space, perfect for swimming, kayaking, fishing, or simply relaxing with a gorgeous view of Mobile Bay.
A Beach That Has it All
The star attraction is a brand-new, 900-foot pocket beach.
Protected by sturdy rock walls, the beach forms cozy coves that gently open up to Mobile Bay, offering calmer waters ideal for water sports or just splashing around.
Families will love the nautical-themed playground, conveniently positioned near shady picnic pavilions.
Visitors can also stroll along walking paths, utilize modern restroom facilities, or stop by the newly built park office.
Birdwatching Haven and Nature’s Playground
Nature enthusiasts have plenty to celebrate too.
Before its closure, Bayfront Park was a beloved spot on Alabama’s Coastal Birding Trail, attracting bird watchers from near and far.
Conservation efforts continue, and later this year, work will begin on reconstructing the park’s boardwalk—without disrupting your visits.
This means uninterrupted opportunities for birdwatching, nature walks, and quiet moments of tranquility by the water.
A Community Celebration to Remember
The park’s reopening kicked off with a cheerful celebration, complete with music, face painting, and plenty of food.
Families enjoyed free goodie bags and explored the upgraded facilities, turning an ordinary Sunday afternoon into a lively community gathering.
Kayakers and canoeists eagerly tested the waters, and anglers dusted off their fishing rods to enjoy the renovated shoreline.
Park officials encouraged everyone to have fun safely, reminding visitors to keep alcohol at home and to avoid pop-up canopies.
Investing in Local Outdoor Fun
County Commissioner Randall Dueitt acknowledged some frustrations about closures like Cedar Point Pier, but explained how essential these temporary interruptions are for long-term improvements.
Mobile County is making major moves to boost outdoor recreation, recently reopening Chickasabogue Park and acquiring popular spots like Memories Fish Camp and Escatawpa Hollow Campground.
Future projects include a boat launch near Cedar Point, offering even more ways to enjoy local waterways.
Bayfront Park is now open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, providing a beautiful spot for sun-soaked adventures, scenic views, and plenty of family fun.
See you there!
