School has officially started in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, and most parents are pumped to get their kids out of the house.
It’s a different story for some kiddos, though.
Some students might be feeling a bit nervous about the new school year.
According to mental health pros, it’s totally normal for them to have discomfort before a routine change.
Hey, it happens to the best of us!
Besides, things sure are different post-pandemic. Our kids have been through a rollercoaster of changes.
This constant transitioning can certainly take a toll on their confidence.
Plus, today’s students have a whole new set of challenges to face, like the notorious social media monster.
It’s a digital jungle out there, and it can mess with their minds!
So, what can we do to help alleviate this stress?
First, be a listening ear.
Sit down with your kiddo and let them talk about their feelings.
Listen without judgment and reassure them that it’s okay to feel nervous.
After all, we all get those butterflies sometimes!
Then, point out the positives.
Talk about the exciting stuff they’re looking forward to at school, like seeing friends, joining clubs, or trying out for teams.
Focusing on the fun might help ease their worries.
At home, try your best to create a safe space.
Your home is supposed to be a safe haven where they can unwind and recharge.
If they do have a rough day at school, a stress-free zone will help them feel supported.
You might sound like a broken record at this point, but remind them to limit social media time as it can add to their anxiety.
Lastly, empower them.
Boost their confidence by reminding them of their strengths and abilities.
Let them know they’ve got what it takes to rock this school year!
Ultimately, we’re all excited for the big school kickoff, but let’s be mindful of the extra pressures kids face today.
