The city council just gave the green light for the construction of the Africatown Welcome Center, a long-awaited project that will honor one of the most remarkable communities in American history.

Once built, this center will serve as the first stop for visitors looking to explore Africatown’s powerful story—a tale of resilience, culture, and triumph over adversity.

A Front Door to History and Culture

Imagine rolling into town, eager to learn about Africatown, and bam—there it is.

A welcoming, beautifully designed space ready to introduce you to the history and people who made this community what it is today.

The Africatown Welcome Center is more than just a building.

It will connect visitors to historic landmarks, cultural sites, and untold stories.

Think interactive exhibits, engaging tours, and a deep dive into the heritage of those who built Africatown from the ground up.

And the best part? The design was shaped by the people who live here.

Multiple community meetings and surveys ensured that the space truly reflects the heart and soul of Africatown.

The Dream Team Behind the Project

This isn’t just another government project—it’s a passion-fueled effort backed by key players who care.

The city partnered with Mott MacDonald for design, C. Roberds General Contractors for construction, and the Africatown Community Development Corporation, which originally owned the property.

With so many hands on deck, there’s no doubt this center will be something special.

It’s a major step in turning Africatown into a cultural and historical hotspot that draws visitors from all over.

Africatown’s Unstoppable Legacy

Africatown’s story is unlike any other. In 1860, 110 Africans arrived in Mobile on the Clotilda, the last known U.S. slave ship.

Slavery had already been abolished, making their journey both illegal and heartbreaking. But from tragedy came an incredible act of resilience.

After emancipation, 32 of these survivors built Africatown, preserving their language, customs, and way of life for generations.

Even today, their descendants continue to honor and protect this legacy.

With the new welcome center, this story will have a permanent home—a place where visitors can feel the power of the past while looking toward an inspiring future.

The Countdown to Opening Day

The city council has locked in a contract with C. Roberds General Contractors, and once the U.S. Treasury Department gives the final approval, construction will begin.

The estimated timeline? About a year.

That means this time next year, Africatown will have a brand-new, state-of-the-art welcome center, ready to inspire, educate, and celebrate a legacy that refuses to fade.

This isn’t just a win for Africatown—it’s a win for history, for Mobile, and for every visitor who will walk through those doors and leave with a deeper appreciation for the incredible journey of this community.

The best stories deserve to be told.

And Africatown’s story? It’s about to reach even more people than ever before.
